What Is a Roofing Square?
The unit your quote is built on, and the reason your roof is bigger than your house.

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof area. A 2,400 square foot roof is 24 squares. It is the unit everything in roofing is priced, ordered and delivered in, and it is why quotes talk about squares rather than square feet.
Your roof is bigger than your house
This catches almost everyone. A 2,000 square foot single-storey house does not have a 2,000 square foot roof, for two reasons.
1. Pitch
A roof is a slope, and a slope covering a given footprint is longer than the footprint. The steeper the roof, the bigger the difference. A flat roof over 2,000 square feet is 2,000 square feet of roofing. A moderately pitched one over the same footprint is meaningfully more, and a steep one is more again.
Pitch is written as rise over run: a 6:12 pitch rises six inches for every twelve horizontal. Anything above about 7:12 is steep enough to change how the crew works, which is why it moves the price beyond just adding area.
2. Overhangs
Eaves extend past the walls, and on mid-century Houston houses with wide overhangs that adds up quickly.
Why waste is on your quote
Shingles get cut. Every valley, hip, rake and penetration produces offcuts, and starter and ridge courses consume material differently from the field. A quote therefore includes a waste allowance, typically a percentage on top of the measured area.
A simple gable roof generates little waste. A cut-up roof with many valleys and dormers generates a lot. A quote with no waste allowance at all is either measuring generously already or about to run short on the day.
What this means for comparing quotes
Two quotes on the same house can use different square counts, and that alone can explain a large price difference. If one roofer measured 24 squares and another measured 29, you are not comparing prices, you are comparing measurements.
Ask every roofer for the square count and the pitch on the quote. If they will not put it in writing, that is your answer. On a Cost Plus quote it has to be there, because the material line is built from it and you are seeing the supplier invoice.
The other numbers on your quote
- Squares. Roof area in hundreds of square feet.
- Pitch. Rise over run. Affects labour and staging, not just area.
- Layers. How many roofs are coming off. Two layers roughly doubles the tear-off and the disposal.
- Linear feet of ridge, hip, valley and rake. These take different material from the field and are priced separately.
- Penetration count. Pipes, vents and units, each needing new flashing.
- Decking, per sheet. Nobody can know the quantity before tear-off, so it should be priced per sheet up front rather than discovered later.

How many squares is my roof?
Take the footprint, add the overhangs, and multiply by a factor for the pitch, then divide by 100. In practice a roofer measures it properly from the roof or from aerial measurement, and the number should appear on your quote.
Why do two roofers give me different square counts for the same house?
Different measuring methods and different waste allowances. It is one of the most common reasons quotes differ, and it is why the square count belongs in writing.
How much waste should be on a quote?
It depends on how cut up the roof is. A simple gable produces very little, a complex roof with many valleys and dormers produces a lot. What matters is that the allowance is stated rather than hidden.
