When to Replace Your Gutters
They are the cheapest part of the exterior and they protect the most expensive parts.

The signs
- They overflow in heavy rain even when clear. That is a capacity problem, not a cleaning problem.
- They sag or pull away from the fascia. Usually the fascia has rotted and no longer holds a screw, which means two jobs rather than one.
- Seams leak, which is the standard failure on sectional gutter with a joint every ten feet.
- Staining or peeling paint on the fascia below or behind them.
- Erosion or splash marks in the beds underneath.
- Standing water in the gutter after rain, meaning the pitch is wrong or the gutter has bowed.
- Visible rust, cracks or separated corners.
Why standard gutters overflow here
Most residential gutter in the United States is 5 inch K-style with 2 by 3 inch downspouts, which is adequate for most of the country. Houston is not most of the country. Our rainfall intensity, the short violent nature of our storms and the large simple roof planes on a lot of local housing put more water into a gutter than a 5 inch profile can carry.
The upgrade worth making: 6 inch gutter with 3 by 4 inch downspouts. The larger gutter carries substantially more water and the larger downspout is far less prone to clogging with the leaf and pine needle load Houston trees produce. The cost difference is modest. The difference in a real storm is not.
Capacity is also about downspout count. A long run with a single outlet at one end will overflow at the far corner whatever the profile. More outlets, better spaced, solves more than a bigger gutter alone.
What overflow is actually costing you
- Fascia rot, because the water runs down the back of the gutter into the board it hangs from. This is the most common path to fascia rot in Houston.
- Soaked siding and eventually the sheathing behind it.
- Foundation movement. On expansive clay, uneven wetting and drying around a slab is a structural concern rather than a landscaping one.
- Water into the soffit vents where overflow blows back under the eave.
Seamless versus sectional
Seamless gutter is rolled on site from a coil to the exact length of the run, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. Sectional gutter has a joint every ten feet, and every joint is a future leak. The longevity difference is large and the cost difference is small.
Gutter guards, honestly
They reduce cleaning. They do not eliminate it, and anyone selling them as maintenance free is overselling. Fine debris still gets through most designs, pine needles defeat many of them outright, and a clogged guard is worse than no guard because you cannot see or easily clear the blockage.
Under heavy pine or oak, a quality micro-mesh guard genuinely repays itself. Under a clear roof with little overhang, you are buying very little.
Do it with the roof
If you are replacing the roof, this is the cheapest time. The gutters have to come off or be protected for the tear-off anyway, and the fascia behind them is visible and accessible while the drip edge is off. How we size and hang them.

Well clear of the foundation, with extensions, splash blocks on a slope that runs away, or underground drainage to daylight. On clay soil this matters more than most homeowners realise.
