Impact-Resistant Shingles in Texas
A real upgrade, and the discount is not a number anyone can quote you without seeing your policy.

What Class 4 means
Class 4 is the highest rating in UL 2218, an impact resistance test. A two inch steel ball is dropped onto the shingle from a set height, twice in the same spot, and the shingle passes if the mat does not fracture. Class 4 is the top of a scale running from 1 to 4.
How it is achieved varies. Most impact-rated asphalt shingles use a polymer-modified asphalt that stays flexible, so an impact that would crack a standard shingle deforms it instead. Some use a reinforcing mesh on the back.
What it does and does not do. Class 4 is about impact. It does not make the shingle last longer in heat, resist wind better, or change how it ages under UV. A Class 4 roof on an under-ventilated attic still fails early.
The insurance discount, honestly
Many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof. That is real and it is the main financial argument for the upgrade, because unlike the roof, the discount recurs every year you hold the policy.
What nobody can honestly tell you is the percentage. It varies by carrier, by policy, by your location and sometimes by the specific product. Any roofer or salesman quoting you a specific figure without having seen your policy is making it up, and you should treat that as information about them.
The only reliable route is to call your own insurer, tell them you are considering a Class 4 roof, and ask what discount they would apply to your policy. Then do the arithmetic against the material cost difference on your actual quote. Ask whether they require the manufacturer's certificate and what documentation they need, because they usually do.
When the upgrade makes sense
- Your carrier offers a meaningful discount and you plan to stay in the house.
- You are in a part of the metro that takes hail regularly, which on this side of Houston is most of the north and west.
- You have already had a hail claim, which can affect future premiums and coverage terms.
- Your roof is large enough that repeated partial claims would be disruptive.
When it does not
- Your carrier offers little or nothing, which some do not.
- You are selling soon. The discount goes to the next owner.
- The money would be better spent on the things that decide how long the roof lasts: new flashing throughout, six-nail installation and corrected attic ventilation. On a roof with blocked soffit intake, that is a straightforwardly better purchase.
A note on metal roofs
Metal is excellent against hail penetration and it dents. Increasingly, Texas carriers add a cosmetic damage exclusion when insuring a metal roof, meaning dents that do not affect function are not covered. If you are choosing metal partly for hail, read that endorsement before you buy, because you may be looking at those dents for a long time.
What we install
Tamko Storm Fighter Flex is the Class 4 product we use, alongside Heritage for standard architectural work. We will price both on your quote so you can see the actual material difference on your roof rather than a percentage, and then you can take that number to your insurer and find out whether it pays. The three tiers compared.
Common Questions
How much will a Class 4 roof save on my insurance?
It varies by carrier, policy and location, and nobody can honestly quote you a figure without seeing your policy. Call your own insurer and ask what discount they would apply, then compare it against the material cost difference on your quote.
Does Class 4 mean hail will not damage my roof?
No. It means the shingle is far more likely to deform rather than fracture under impact. It is a substantial improvement, not immunity.
Do impact-resistant shingles last longer?
Not inherently. The rating is about impact resistance, not heat, UV or wind. Ventilation and installation quality still decide the service life.
Will my insurer need proof?
Usually yes, typically the manufacturer's certificate for the specific product along with the invoice. Ask what they need before the job rather than after.
