Shingle Roofing in Houston
Three tiers, and an honest account of what the extra money buys in Houston.

Materials at our supplier invoice cost, labor at our published rate, one stated fee. No salesmen, no hidden fees, every receipt is yours.
Asphalt shingles cover the overwhelming majority of Houston roofs, for good reasons. They handle our thermal cycling, they are repairable, every crew in the city knows how to install them, and the material cost per square is a fraction of tile or standing seam.
We install Tamko across all three tiers. Standardising on one manufacturer means our crews know one nailing pattern, one valley spec and one ventilation requirement cold, and the warranty chain stays intact from deck to ridge.
The three tiers, and what actually changes
Tamko Heritage, architectural
The standard choice and the right one for most houses here. Laminated two-layer construction, a dimensional shadow line rather than the flat look of a three-tab, and a limited lifetime warranty. Rated to 130 mph when installed with the enhanced six-nail pattern, which is how we install it.
If you are replacing a three-tab roof, this is a visible upgrade in both appearance and wind performance for a modest difference in material cost.
Tamko Storm Fighter Flex, Class 4 impact rated
The same shingle concept with a polymer-modified asphalt that stays flexible, so a hailstone that would fracture a standard shingle bruises it instead. Class 4 is the highest impact rating in the UL 2218 test, which fires a two inch steel ball at the shingle.
Two things worth knowing. First, Class 4 is about resisting hail, not about wind or heat. Second, many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof, and how much varies enormously by carrier and by policy. Call your own insurer and ask what they would give you before you decide. Anyone who quotes you a specific percentage without seeing your policy is making it up. More on the trade-off here.
Tamko Titan XT, premium
Heavier, wider exposure, and a more pronounced profile. Buy it for the appearance and the increased weight, not for a functional difference in leak resistance. On a large, visible roof where the house warrants it, it looks considerably better. On a single-storey ranch behind a row of oaks, the money is better spent on ventilation and better flashing.

The parts of a shingle roof that are not shingles
This is where roofs are actually won and lost, and where cheap quotes are cheap.
- Underlayment. Synthetic rather than felt. It does not tear in wind during the dry-in and it does not wrinkle when it gets damp.
- Ice and water shield in the valleys and around every penetration. Not for ice here, for the volume of water Houston moves through a valley in a summer storm.
- New metal throughout. Drip edge, valley metal, step and counter flashing, pipe boots. Reused flashing is the leading cause of a leak in a new roof.
- The nailing pattern. Six nails per shingle, placed in the nail line. High nails miss the shingle below and the roof comes off in a wind event years later, and nobody can see it once the next course is down.
- Balanced ventilation. Exhaust at the ridge and intake at the soffit, in proportion. The most commonly skipped part of a Houston roof.
What it costs, and how you can check
Every job on this page is priced Cost Plus. You see the supplier invoice for the materials, the crew hours at our published rate, the permit and disposal at what they actually cost, and one service fee of 20 to 30 percent set by job complexity and locked before anything starts. There is no second number and no change order conversation after the fact. The full breakdown is here.
Common Questions
How long do architectural shingles last in Houston?
Commonly eighteen to twenty five years when properly installed and properly ventilated. Heat, humidity and UV here take real years off the rated life, and a poorly ventilated attic can finish a roof in twelve.
Are Class 4 impact-resistant shingles worth the extra cost?
If your carrier offers a meaningful premium discount and you are in a hail-prone part of the metro, often yes, and the discount compounds every year. Call your insurer and get your actual number before deciding, because it varies widely by carrier.
What is the difference between three-tab and architectural?
Three-tab is a single flat layer, lighter, cheaper and lower rated for wind. Architectural is two laminated layers, thicker, better looking and substantially better in wind. Very few new Houston roofs are three-tab now and we do not recommend it.
Can I mix shingle types on one roof?
You can physically, and you should not. Different tiers have different exposures and thicknesses, the courses will not line up, and you create a warranty argument.
