Roof Colour and Houston Heat
A real effect, a smaller one than the salesman suggests, and one thing that matters more.

It is genuinely true that a lighter roof absorbs less solar heat than a dark one, and in a climate where you run air conditioning eight months a year that is not nothing. It is also routinely oversold.
What actually happens
A dark roof surface in direct Houston sun reaches temperatures far above air temperature. A light or reflective surface reaches a lower peak because more of the solar energy is reflected rather than absorbed. Less heat into the roof assembly means less heat radiating down into the attic, and a cooler attic means less load on your air conditioning and less thermal ageing of the shingles themselves.
The relevant technical property is solar reflectance, how much solar energy the surface bounces back, often paired with thermal emittance in a combined index. Manufacturers publish these figures for shingles that have been rated.
Why the effect is smaller than you might expect
- Asphalt shingles are dark by nature. Even a "light" architectural shingle is nowhere near the reflectance of a white membrane or a reflective metal finish. The range of choice within asphalt is narrower than the brochure implies.
- Attic insulation is doing most of the work. If your ceiling insulation is adequate, much of the attic heat is already being stopped before it reaches your rooms.
- Your ductwork matters more. Air conditioning ducts running through a hot attic lose cooling into that space. Sealing and insulating ducts frequently beats roof colour by a wide margin.
- Reflectance degrades. Dirt, algae and weathering reduce it over time.
The thing that beats colour, every time: attic ventilation. A light roof over an attic with blocked soffit intake will still run extremely hot, because the heat that does get in has nowhere to go. Fix the intake first. It costs less than upgrading the shingle and it does more. Why.
Where colour genuinely earns its place
- Low-slope and flat roofs. A white TPO membrane or a reflective coating on a flat roof over living space makes a substantial difference, because the surface is horizontal and takes the full midday load.
- Metal roofs, where reflective finishes are genuinely reflective rather than marginally lighter asphalt.
- Patio covers and carports, where there is no attic and no insulation between the surface and the space below.
The practical advice
Choose the colour you want your house to look like, within whatever your HOA or deed restrictions allow, and lean lighter if you are indifferent. Then spend the energy budget on ventilation, duct sealing and insulation, which is where the return actually is.
And check your restrictions before you fall in love with a colour. Many Houston communities maintain approved lists, and approval takes time.

Will a lighter roof lower my electricity bill?
Somewhat, and less than attic ventilation, duct sealing or insulation will. The effect is real but narrow within asphalt shingles, because even light asphalt is fairly dark.
What about a white or 'cool' roof?
Genuinely reflective surfaces make a real difference, and in residential terms that usually means a membrane on a flat roof or a reflective metal finish rather than an asphalt shingle.
